Abstract

TQM advocates continuous process improvement through worker involvement in manpower, methods, machine, and material improvements. In a TQM, environment standards are continually challenged and improved, and new standards are established -drily to be challenged and improved again. This loop never ceases; thus, improvement is created .(I)The concept of strategic human resource management -which represent an important element in the TQM- to achieve organizational business objectives and goals was first introduced by Devanna et al. in 1981. Authors (Arthur, 1994 ; Chang and Huang, 2005; Huselid, 1995 -1 MacDuffie, 1995 ) claim that when human resource management is managed successfully and, in turn, contributes to positive organizational effectiveness. This process is termed strategic human resource management (SHRM). Accordingly, the underlying assumption of SHRM is that organizational performance is affected by employees, through a set of human resource practices. The full potential of employee empowerment is realized in the empowered organization, when employees: align their goals with appropriate higher organization purpose; have the authority and opportunity to maximize their contribution; are capable of taking appropriate action; are committed to the organization’s purr -- -,-,; and have the means to achieve it (2) and updates their performance that match well with TQM programs and approaches and this can be achieved by learning.
There is more than one way to learn well and one of these is Self Directed Learning (SDL) which is considered an important skill in today’s ever-changing world of work which requires culture change in order to improve Total Quality Management (TQM).SDL is important because it allows the engineers who should monitor the quality of their own work to improve their work, upgrade their qualifications, seek knowledge and new skills and keep up with development in TQM. The relation between SDL and TQM is based upon the belief that engineers should be leaders in making change rather than reacting to changes made by others and the belief that positive changes in one’s own practice behavior can have positive effects on larger systems. Self-directed learning is an important topic as it assumes that individuals become ready to learn what is required to perform their evolving life tasks or to cope more adequately with their life and/or working problems in order to improve it’s quality.
