Abstract

The aim of this study IS to reView the role of transtracheal lymphography as a method of visualization of mediastinal nodes, versus Computerized Tomography Scanning in detecting the involved
mediastinal lymph nodes in various diseases causing mediastinal lymphadenopathy.
There are many methods for visualization of mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Of these: standard chest radiography, conventional
tomography, ultrasonography, mediastinoscopy, isotope scanrung,
lymphography, computerized tomography scan, magnetic renonance rmagmg.
Standard chest radiography IS simple, safe, and econOmIc.
However, it provides only a limited idea about nodal .metastasis to the mediastinum.
Conventional tomography has a limited value, as regard, the detection of mediastinal lymphadenopathy, it only rmproves demonstration of a mediastinal mass, and detect calcification within the mediastinal lymph nodes.
Ultrasonography of the chest, also, has a limited value as the presence of air in the lungs, which is a poor transmitter of sound, and also, presence of bony cage, reflects a large portion of sound waves. However, study of mediastinal masses and enlarged nodes can be done through, suprasternal approach, ventral approach, and posterior paravertebral approach.
Mediastinoscopy, IS valuable in detectiIig and visualizing and taking biopsy from mediastinal lymph nodes.
