Abstract The subject of environmental pollution has been receiving a great attention by scientists and politicians In view of its impact on health, climate and economy. In line with this trend, the present work deals with a water pollution problem, namely the removal of trace chromates from industrial waste solutions. Chromates pollutant comes from the waste solution of industries which use hexavalent chromium e.g.tanners,textile mills, pigment industry, metal finishing industries e.g.chromium plating and chromate conversion coating of metals, drug and organic chemical industries where hexavalent chromium is used as an oxidizing agent. Besides, chromates used as a corrosion inhibitor in industrial cooling systems constitute an important cause for chromate pollution .In view of the health hazard posed by chromate ion, many techniques have been devleoped to reduce its content in waste water to a harmless limit. The most important technique involves reducing chromate to trivalent chromium by a chemical reducing agent such as S02 or FeS04 followed by precipitating Cr(III) as Cr(OH)3 by lime. The present work explores the feasibility of reducing hexavalent chromium cathodicallY in an electrochemical reactor.Recently electrochemical techniques have received wide. |
