Abstract Aim of the work To evaluate the onset and convenience of intubating condition of rocuronium in comparison with suxamethonium. It is still questionable if rocuronium can replace suxamethonium someday? Conclusion The patient can be easily intubated 60 sec., after injection either rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg or suxamethonium 1 mg/kg. There were clinically significant differences as regard duration of action and recovery index of either drugs being much shorter in cases of suxamethonium than in cases of rocuronium. Rocuronium is considered to be medium acting muscle relaxant. Recording haemodynamic changes in this study revealed that there is moderate transient vagolytic effect (trachycardia) following injection of rocuronium which did not occur after suxamethonium. There were mildly significant increases in mean blood pressure following rocuronium while there is insignificant change following suxamethonium. We concluded that the latest new addition of rocuronium fills the gap for an agent with rapid onset while lacking the potentially adverse features of suxamethonium, retaining a medium duration of action. |
