Abstract

Summary:The present study was carried out on three whole adult ostriches and 15 isolated stomach of apparently healthy birds of both sexes. The whole birds were slaughtered and preserved by injection of a mixture of 10% formalin, 2% phenol and 1% glycerine via the left carotid artery. Five isolated specimens were fixed by using the aforementioned solution which was poured through the esophagus, then immersed in the same solution for at least 72 hours. The specimens were thoroughly dissected to describe the macro-morphology of the stomach.
Five specimens of the stomach were isolated carefully with the celiac artery. They were used to study the arterial blood supply of ostrich stomach by injection of gum milk (Latex 60%) colored red with carmine or 50/50 mixture of Indian ink and fowl serum in the celiac artery of these specimens, and then fixed in 10% formalin for 4-7 days. Another five specimens were prepared and processed for the histological studies of the stomach.
