Abstract

Natural nests of Megachile uniformis (Alf.) were discovered in
El-Tal El Kebeer area ,40 k.m. west of Ismailia, 120 k.m. north
east of Cairo, Egypt. Nests were found in the old walls in many
houses and yards. It was noticed that many nests were heavy
populated with bees associated with their natural enemies.
This bee is in the same genus and similar in size to the alfalfa
well-known leafcutting bee Megachile rotundata (Fabr.) used
in North America & Canada for alfalfa pollination and seed
production. The bees were successfully transferred by the
I~ artificial polystyrene foam nests to a new location.
, Observations were made either in natural and artificial nests to
study some aspects of these bees, such as life cycle, nesting
activity, the importance of the second generation and the
natural enemies.
The potential use of this bee as a pollinator for alfalfa crop and
in seed production is also discussed.
