Abstract

Aim of the study
To estimate the plasma levels of vit-K dependent coagulation factors II, VII, IX, X and protein C in compensated liver cirrhosis & study their correlation with liver function tests.
Conclusions
1- The reduced plasma activity of vitamin K dependent proteins namely factors II, X & protein C might have a role in the defective haemostatic mechanism encountered in liver cirrhotic patients, as liver is the major site of synthesis of these factors or also due to its consumption by disseminated intravascular coagulation.
2- Reducing plasma level of both factors (II & X) are early sensitive indicators of liver cirrhosis, while the reduction of plasma levels of factors VII & IX may be later reduce are later.
3- As protein C is highly dependant on liver cell function so the protein C level in patients with liver cirrhosis is an indicator for liver cell dysfunction than for thrombotic tendency in these patients.
4- Hypocoagulability in liver disease may be due to abnormalities in platelet number, defective or deficient procoagulant & anticoagulant factors.
5- HCV infection showed non significant correlation with all factors except factor VII.
6- The diversity of the clotting abnormalities in liver disease proves the importance of normal liver for maintenance of normal haemostasis.
