Abstract

Aim of the work

Failed back surgery is a major problem for both the surgeon and the patient, thus this study aims at assessment of indications of surgery, complications you may face during or after surgery, its avoidance and management.
Conclusions
Complications of lumbar spine surgery:
Surgery on the lumbar spine is not always successful. The keystone for management of patients with failed back surgery is to obtain an accurate diagnosis. This could be achieved through proper patient evaluation, meticulous analysis of imaging studies and finally decision making.
Complications of discectomy and laminectomy:
Wrong level/ insufficient levels, recurrent disc herniation, cauda equine and nerve root injury, Dural tears, Discitis, Lumbar instability, Arachoiditis, Epidural scarring are the most frequent complications occur.
Complications of spinal fixation:
Failure of instrumentation, internal fixation difficulties, neurological complications, loss of correction, pseudoarthrosis, fracture of the vertebral body, vascular injury, infections, loss of lumbar lordosis, Graft site complications, excessive bleeding and medical complications are the most important complications here.
Complications of spondylolisthesis surgery:
Excessive bleeding, dural lacerations, complications of decompression, neural injuries, screw breakage, pseudoarthrosis and graft site complications are the commonest.
Complications of scoliosis surgery:
Hook dislodgement, breakage of the rod or migration, over correction are the commonest complications.
Other complications may be found with operations concerned with management of canal stenosis, pott’s disease and tumors.
