Abstract

The study area comprises two structural domains; Wadi Feiran metamorphic belt and Gabal Hadahid Phanerozoic rocks. The main aim of this study is to reveal the tectonic evolution of the two domains. To achieve this purpose it is important to accurately map the different geologic rock units by the use of ETM-image enhancement methods encompassing contrast stretching, band ratioing, and principal component analysis (PCA) techniques. The structural analysis reveals the presence of four generations of folding affecting Wadi Feiran area; F1-folds are characterized by recumbent folds that are folded by steeply dipping to upright folds of the second generation (F2-folds). The third generation (F3-folds) is not common in Wadi Feiran area that is characterized by moderately dipping axial planes, whereas the fourth generation (F4-folds) is characterized by open folds that are plunged in the northeast direction with moderate angle of plunge. The paleostress analysis encompasses six groups of faulting events; the first is recorded in Wadi Feiran area which is a reverse regime , followed by four groups of normal faulting regime of dip-slip sense of movement of directions; N-S, E-W, N30º-40ºE, and N50º-60ºW which represents the trend of the Gulf of Suez rift whereas the sixth group is a strike slip with left-lateral sense of movement. The statistical analysis of structural lineaments that are extracted by filtering technique applied on the ETM-image of the study area shows that the Gulf of Suez structural trend has less effect on the adjacent basement rocks.
