Abstract This thesis presented phytochemical studies of stem bark of Erythrina lysisternon Hutch, and leaves of Glycyrrhiza glabra L. • cultivated in Egypt. These plants belong to family leguminosae. The latter contains various chemical compounds, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, anthracenes, triterpenes and quihones, the majority are biologically active. Eiythrina species are reputed for the presence of alkaloids and prenylated flavonoids. Erythrina plants are used in folkioric medicine for the treatment of female infertility, stomach pain and certain microbial • (‘3) infections Plants belonging to the genus Glycyrrhiza are characterized by • having anti-inflammatory, anti-gastric ulcer, anti-allergic and anti hepatotoxic activities (52) 4In the light of previously published work, it was of interest to isolate and identify flavonoidal constituents of Erythrina lysistemon and Glycyrrhiza glabra cultivated in Egypt. Attempts were made to determine the biological activity of the isolated compounds. This thesis includes three parts: Part 1: phytochemical study of Erythrina lysistemon Hutch., stem bark: Flavonoidal constituents. Part II: phytochemical study of Glycyrrhiza glabra L., leaves : Flavonoidal constituents. Part Ill: Biological activities bf some of the isolated flavonoids. |
