Abstract Aim of the work: To evaluate the functional and cosmetic postoperative results of modified transconjunctival surgical technique for orbital decompression in patients with thyroid orbitopathy. Summary and Conclusion Our study was carried out in ophthalmology department in Al Minia, Cairo and Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals between January 2003 and January 2007 including 31 patients (58 orbits) who had TO . All patients were in the quiescent stage for at least 6 months before surgery. The aim of our study is to evaluate the functional and cosmetic postoperative results of modified transconjunctival orbital decompression in these patients. Through medical and ophthalmological evaluations were done especially assessment of the degree of proptosis, extent of preoperative diplopia, fundus examination for optic disc affection in addition to orbital ultrasound and CT. Transconjunctival orbital decompression surgery was done and the patients were followed up for 6-24 months. In our study using the transconjunctival approach there is reduction of proptosis by a mean of 5.3 mm and improvement of the best-corrected visual acuity by two lines in 6 of 7 cases with CON. Only five cases had transient postoperative diplopia which resolved after three months. Transconjunctival orbital decompression yields to good cosmetic and functional outcome with minimum morbidity for the patient also it is an easy and less time consuming procedure. |
