Abstract Literature survey revealed that genus Melilotus has a great reputation as antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antispasmodic and anticoagulant. Some of Melilotus species were prescribed in folk medicine for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids. These activities may be attributed to the presence of a wide array of biologically active secondary metabolites including flavonoids, saponins, coumarins and phenolic acids. Thus, the work in this thesis represents a phytochemical investigation of M. indicus L. (All.) and M. messanensis L. (All.), (Fabaceae), which are the most common species in Egypt.
