Abstract

A study of food preference and abundance of oriental hornet, Vespa orientalis and two cockroach species, Blatella germanica and Periplaneta Americana revealed that the molasses was the most preferred bait for Vespa and moist bread for cockroaches. Highest population density of wasps and cockroaches were found during the summer season. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference between both studied wadis (wadi Mandar and wadi Um-Adawi) in the numbers of collected wasps and cockroaches. The study of insects associated with Acacia trees resulted in 19467 individual insects and araneids were collected from the soil surrounding the selected trees represented by 37 families and 13 orders. A high similarity between the two Acacia tortilis (tortilis and raddiana) according to number of insects recorded per each species during the study period was found (81.65%). Highest month of pods infestation with insects and araneids was during June 2002 with 1167 infested seeds recorded. The total number of infested seeds was 2603 with a percentage value 64.34 % of the collected seeds. The biochemical studies on Vespa orientalis venom and muscles (SDS Gel electrophoresis) of different wadis in South Sinai Protectorates and Ismailia governorate revealed that all individuals of the different wadis are genetically similar regardless to the site from which they were collected except for some cases; whereas the individuals from different sites tend to cluster together regardless to the site from which they were collected.
