Abstract

Samples of the red shrimp Metapenaeus monoceros were collected from the trawl catches landed at Abu- Qir fisheries harbour east of Alexandria city during the period January2001- December 2003.
The study showed that there is no morphometric difference between the sexes and females in general are heavier than males due to gonads formation.
The external and internal genitalia were studied, for both males and females confirmed with histological data for different maturity stages.
The breeding season is prolonged with two peaks, May-July and September- October.
It has been found that, the fertilized egg diameter is of 0.26 mm, 5 nauplius , 3 zoea, 3mysis and the first post stages were studied.
The complete larval development, from egg to first Post-larva takes 12.6-17 days.
It has been confirmed that the nutritional value of soybean meal-plant protein- as replacement for fish meal-animal protein- were studied, in correlation to the effect on growth rate and biochemical structure. The results indicate that the soybean meal serves as suitable partial replacement for fish meal.
