Abstract

Pelvic organ prolapse is a common condition in women and its treatment is one of the most common surgical indications in women(1)
Uterine prolapse is the protrusion of the uterus into the vagina, and at times outside the vagina, uterine prolapse is one form of the pelvic organ prolapse.(5)
There are several types of surgical procedures that are used in treatment of uterine prolapse.
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the results of abdominal sacropexy using a polypropylene mesh in women with uterine or vault prolapse as one of the procedures that are used in treatment of uterine prolapse.
The study subjects included 33 women with symptomatic uterovaginal prolapse who wanted to preserve the uterus.
All patients were subjected to the usual preoperative preparations of abdominal operations including routine laboratory investigation including complete urine analysis, hemoglobin percent and complete blood count, fasting blood sugar and bleeding, clotting and prothrombin times and pelvic ultrasound to detect any uterine or adenexial abnormalities.
Sacrohysteropexy performed at our gynecology unite on all patients and notes were taken for each patient before, during and after operation immediately postoperatively and six month later. Subjective assessment of common symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction was done, as well as objective assessment by vaginal examination applying the POPQ system.
The results can be summarized as follows:
1. The age of these patients ranged from 29-65 years.
2. All33 cases had normal vaginal deliveries with mean parity4.06 ranging from1-13
3. All patients had symptoms caused by uterine prolapse before operation, symptoms attributable to the condition included protrusion, sexual dysfunction, irretative symptoms and chronic pelvic pain.
4. The time taken in the operation ranged from (30-75) minutes with a mean value (45.76) minutes.
5. The objective and subjective long-term success rates of sacrohysteropexy were 93.9%and 81.8% respectively.
6. No early postoperative complications were reported during our procedure.
7. Late postoperative complications occurred in 2 cases had delayed voiding recovery 6.05% .
8. No reported cases of vaginal mesh erosion in our studied group.
