Abstract

The present work aimed to study and to assess the response of patients with metastatic and recurrent breast carcinoma to 5-fluoropyrimidine carbamate (capecitabine) as first line treatment compared to the response to CAF combination chemotherapy in a similar
group of patients.
Forty patients with metastatic and recurrent breast cancer were randomized into two treatment groups.
Group I: Twenty patients received 5-fluoropyrimidine carbamate (capecitabine) at a dose of 2500 mg/m2 divided into two daily doses for 14 days followed by a 7 day rest period assessment after 3 cycles.
Group II: Twenty patients received CAF chemotherapy consisted of
- Cyclophosphamide 600mg/m2.
- Adrinamycin 40mg/m2.
- Fluorouracil 500mg/m2. Repeated every 21 days assessment after 3 cycles.
The peak age incidence for group I & II was from 40-50 years.
Grade II tumors were the most frequent grade in the two treatment groups which represented 65% in group I and 75% in group II.
Most of the primary tumors were located in the upper outer quadrant of the breast and represented 85% in group I and 80% in group II.
