Abstract

The microstructures of isothermal transformation products obtained in two copper-manganese-aluminium alloys (BS 1400 CMA-1 containing iron, and a high purity iron-free material, CMA-2)have been examined. The techniques employed during the investigation included optical and electron microscopy, electron diffraction, elrctron probe microanalysis of both bulk and thin foil specimens, and X-ray diffraction. The as-cast microstructure of the CMA-1 alloy consisted of a- and B- phases and intermetallic precipitates of various morphologies. The intermetallic particles in CMA-1 were iron-rich. The as-cast CMA-2 alloy contained only a- and B- phases, and had a much larger grain size than CMA-1.
