Abstract

This thesis discusses the evaluation of thermal conductivity for single gases and gas mixtures. The energy is transferred in gases by the random motion and collisions of molecules. The basic equation that describes this motion is th Boltzmann eqution. Many attempts have been made to provide exact analytical solution for this equation. The collision term in the Boltzmann equation represents a hugh mathematical difficulty to represent. Lnearization and moment methods are examples of methods used for attacking such a problem analytically. An alternative technique made use of the high speed computers in the last decades.Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC) is one of these types of alternatives. The (DSMC) method has been used throughout this work to determine the thermal conductivity of a single gas and also for gas mixture. In the case of single gas, the results show a good agreement with the moment method. For the sake of comparison, helium was used as an example for a single gas to determine the thermal conductivity of the gas. For gas mixtures an example of a mixture consisting of neon and argon gases are used to determine its thermal conductivity. The results were compared with previously published experimental data. The comparison shows a good agreement.
