Abstract Staphylococcal aureus infections are a major cause ofmorbidity and mortality, particularly in hospitalized patients.Multidrug resistants S. aureus isolates, especially methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains, remain another clinical andepidemiological problem in hospitals. MRSA strains have now become endemic in hospitals andare considered important nosocomial pathogens. Accordingly, rapid detection of MRSA is crucial for purposes of initiatinginfection control measures and preventing further spread of thepathogen. Appropriate therapy of MRSA infections requires rapidreliable identification. Standardized methods of susceptibilitytests have been developed for this purpose. However, phenotypic expression of MRSA is influencedby culture conditions such as temperature, medium pH andinoculum size. The main mechanism of drug resistance in MRSA isexplained by the production of PBP2a encoded by mecA gene, mecA gene has been distributed among MRSA but not MSSA. |
