Abstract
Initiate prevention programmes, a reliable
up_to_date epidemiological data should be collected. Not
only would such Information show where rheumatic fever and
rheumatic heart disease control programmes are needed, but
data would be valuable in revealing trends.
The present survey was carried out on 4091 school
children in five governmental primary schools in Cairo.
Careful cardiac auscultation was done, and those children
with heart murmurs were subjected to :
(1] Careful history taking.
[2] Clinical examination.
[3] Plain x ray chest posteroanterior view.
[4] Electrocardiogram.
[5] Echocardiography and Doppler examination of the
heart.
Six of these children had rheumatic heart disease four of
them were living in Bab_Elsharia. where overcrowdness and
low socioeconomic conditions are more prevalent.
We also discovered during this survey six congenital heart
disease cases, two children with frequent premature
ventricular contractions; and 55 children with innocent
murmurs.
Rheumatic heart disease is only one of the many
health problems faced by Egypt. Although it is an
eminently preventable di-Sease. other health priorities
makes its control largely neglected. The cost of treating
