Abstract

Thirty-six growing New Zealand rabbits were used in the present work to evaluate the pathologic lesions associated with daily intoxication with two levels of monensin (200 and 300 ppm) as well as the related biochemical and histochemical changes.
Clinically, both experimental groups were similarly affected but with much more severity in the high dose group rabbits. The encountered clinical signs were anorexia, depression, diarrhea with 25 and 41.7% deaths in the low and high dose groups, respectively. Shortly before death, the moribund animals were recumbent and showed tremors.
Grossly, the necropsied animals showed paleness and atrophy of the skeletal muscles, especially those of the limbs, abdomen and chest.
Biochemically, serum activities of CK, AST and LDH had increased significantly from the 1 week till the end of the experiment. This increase was time and dose-related.
Histochemically, qualitative SDH activity in the affected skeletal muscles was markedly decreased only during the 3 and 4th weeks, particularly of the high dose group rabbits.
