Abstract

Thirty heads of adult freshly slaughtered ostriches were used for carrying out this work. This investigation included the studing of the bony structures, macromophological contents of the nasal cavity, blood and nerve supply, as well as, the micromophological structures of the nasal cavity.
The bony boundary of the cavity was described in detailes. As well, the nasal apertures could be observed as nostrils and choanal openings. The nasal contents were vertical cartilaginous lamella, nasal septum, rostral nasal concha, middle nasal concha and caudal concha, nasal gland, duct of the nasal gland, nasolacrimal duct and the infraorbital sinusThere was a vertical cartilaginous lamella at the rostral end of the choanal opening. It arised from the floor of the nasal cavity (Vomer bone) dividing the nasal cavity vertically and incompletely into two unequal compartments. The rostral one (3.5-3.7cm in length and 1.7-1.9cm in width). It was triangular in outlines and contained mainly the rostral nasal concha and a narrow part of the middle concha. The caudal compartment (2.5-2.7cm in length and 2.3-2.5cm in width) was nearly quadrilateral in outlines and was occupied mainly by the rest of the middle concha and all the caudal concha. This caudal chamber contained the openings of the duct of nasal gland, nasolacrimal duct and was communicated with the infraorbital sinus and oral cavity.
