Abstract

The current investigation aims to study the morphological, physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics, in addition to investigate the origin and uniformity of materials for some soil resources of Eastern Desert of Egypt. Classification and quantitative land evaluation for these soils are also carried out. Moreover, the suitability of these soils foe growing certain major crops was achieved. This work could present important information about the potential land resources for proper sustainable agriculture in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. For this study, twenty soil profiles were selected representing five main wadies in the Eastern Desert. These wadies are Wadi Sannur (profiles 1 to 4), Wadi El-Assiuti (profiles 12 to 16), Wadi Shait (profiles 17 to 18) and Wadi El Kharit (profiles 19 to 20). The firest three wadies(Sannur, Tarfa and El-Assiuti) are formed on the northern limestone plateau of Eastern Desert. The other two wadies (Shait and El Kharit) are originated on the southern sandstone plateau.Site characteristics are observed and registered. Soil profiles were dug deep down to 150 cm. Profiles were morphologically described, then soil samples were taken representing different soil horizons for integrated physical, chemical and mineralogical analyses. The important morphological properties were used for evaluating pedological development of profiles.
