Abstract
The present research is an analytical study of the Elements of Mosque design. While it is the aim of the research here in conducted to shed new lights on the architectural links between the past and the present , eliciting an architectural vocabulary that can interact with the modem Technology, it is not the intention of the researcher to seek a symbolism that will hinder or hold back innovation and creativity in the Mosque architecture. On the contrary , the study focuses on the interaction with building technology on condition that it will not contradict with our Islamic values and tradition.
The study comes in an introduction, six chapters and a number of conclusions and recommendations.
Cbaoter 1: includes a general introduction, expl~ning the aims, objectives, constraints, as well as the research organization.
Cbaoter 2: presents historical background of the Mosque, reviewing the different phases of the formation of the Islamic world and the various architectural styles used in building the Mosque in different regions. The same perspective is used to study the formation of the Islamic state in Egypt with a view to identifying the successive Islamic periods ftom the Islamic conquest until the Ottoman period.
Chaoter 3: based on the linguistic approach and the teachings of the Holy Qura’n and Hadith, this chapter attempts a conceptual and terminological definition of the Mosque.!t also describes the religious, social, political roles played by the Mosque in building up the Muslim community.
Chaoter 4: research analysis the Mosque’s components and their development down the successive Islamic periods in Egypt, ftom the following points of view:
• Mosque’s plans reviewing the main variations in the mosque typology .
• Design principals of the Mosque interior space .
• Form Elements (Minarets, courtyard(aI-sahn),passage(aI_riwaq) and the
mihrab ).
