Abstract
Twenty patients with unilateral chronic lateral instability of the ankle and ten control subjects were included in this study. Patients with bilateral chronic lateral instability of the ankle and those with neurological problems were excluded. The age of patients ranged from 18 to 40 years, (average 29 years). There were 19 females (95%) and one male (5%). The left side was affected in IJ patients (55%) and the right side in 9 patients (45%). Ten patients were housewives and the other 10 patients had different occupations.

All cases were subjected to clinical, radiological including stress radiography and electromyographic reflex study of the leg muscles during stance. The stress radiography included the anterior and varus stress radiographics. The anterior stress radiography of both ankles was done. If the anterior displacement of the talus in the injured ankle exceeded the normal ankle by-3 mm or more, rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament was diagnosed.
A special device was used for the varus stress radiography, the talar tilt angle on both sides was measured and if the difference exceeded six degrees or more, diagnosis of rupture calcaneofibular ligament was diagnosed.
