Abstract

Anti epileptic drugs disturb immune system and may induce CMI defect.
The aim of this study was to investigate alterations in CD levels namely CD3, CD4, CD8 and CD4/CD8 ratio in children with idiopathic and symptomatic epilepsy and its relation to the epilepsy and antiepileptic drug used.
The study comprised 30 children with epilepsy free from immune disease recruited from pediatric neurology clinic ; Ain Shams University Hospitals. Ten apparently healthy, age and sex matched children were enrolled as a control group. Patients were subjected to full history with special emphasis on the seizure type, onset, frequency, duration of therapy, type of antiepileptic drug used. Physical and neurological examinations were done.
Fresh blood sample was withdrawn for determination of CD levels including ( CD3, CD4, CD8 and CD4/CD8 ratio ).
The results of this study showed decrease in CD3, CD4, CD4/CD8 ratio and increase in CD8 levels in patients compared to control group.
Increase of CD4 level in patients received VPA compared to patients received CBZ. Increase in CD4 level in patients controlled patients compared to uncontrolled patients.
