Abstract
Immune-based therapy for HPV includes non specific immunotherapy as immune response modifiers like imiquimod and interferon or viral specific immunotherapy as immunization. The successful use of BCG in treatment of papillary tumors of the bladder as non specific immunotherapy encourages the idea of using local BCG injection in CIN (HPV infection).
The aim of local injection of BCG to the cervix is to stimulate the cell mediated immunity to produce cytokines that are proven to be effective as antitumor factors.
This prospective non randomized case-control study was conducted in the early cancer detection unite at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital, Cairo, Egypt during the period from 15/1/2006 to 30/6/2008. The study included fifty patients all diagnosed by colposcopy and histopathology as CIN I or II. Thirty patients as the study group were injected by BCG and twenty patients were not injected as control group.
A significant difference was found between the study group (injected by BCG) and the control group (followed with out injection). CIN in eighteen patients (60%) of the study group regressed after one month by colposcopy and three month by colposcopy guided biopsy from same area diagnosed before as CIN, while three patients only (15%) of the control group regressed with out treatment. After six months the negative results in the injected group increased to twenty two (73.3%) while it decreased in the control group to 10%.
