Abstract

The immunomodulatory agents have been used extensively, nowadays. Levamisole is one of these immunomodulatory agents, recently introduced to clinical medicine.
The present study was carried out to evaluate the immunomodulating effect of levamisole in healthy and infected rabbits referring to its biochemical changes and side-effects on the liver and kidneys, which were elucidated by the histopathological findings.
This study was done by using 55 New Zealand rabbits of both sexes, at the ages of 15 – 30 days, they were divided into six groups. Gp.1 (1a and 1b) was the control (20 rabbits). Gps.(2 – 6) were the experimental groups. Five of the 20 rabbits of gp.(1b) were the control of gps.(5 and 6), where the samples were collected 5 day after infection with E.coli (at the age of 35 days). The other 15 rabbits of gp.(1a) were the control of gps.(2, 3 and 4), where the samples were collected after 15, 30 and 45 day of levamisole administration (at the age 45, 60 and 75 days). Gps.(2 – 4) were orally given levamisole HCL (5 mg /Kg B.W.) daily by an esophageal tube for 15 successive days (gp.2), 30 days (gp.3) and 30 days followed by the withdrawal of the levamisole medication for 15 day before the blood samples were collected (gp.4). Gp.(5) was orally infected with E.coli at a dose of 5 ml bacterial suspension (1.2 x 107 CFU) of viable microorganisms by an esophageal tube at the age of one month. Gp.(6) was administered levamisole HCL (as in group 2), but at the age of 15 days.
