Abstract

The present study aimed at assessment of cord blood BDNF level in full term newborns with perinatal asphyxia, following up its level during reperfusion phase and studying its possible relation to the development and severity of HIE. It was conducted on 40 full term neonates delivered in Gynecology and Obestetric department in Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital in the period from October 2007 to January 2008.
The study included 2 groups:
Patient Group:
Including twenty neonates suffered from perinatal asphyxia (12 males and 8 females). Their gestational age ranged between 37-40 weeks and their weight ranged from 2.6 – 4 kg.
Control Group:
Including twenty healthy full term neonates of comparable age and sex (12 males 8 females).
Neonates with proven sepsis were excluded from the study.
All neonates included in the study were subjected to full medical history, complete clinical examination, Cord blood samples were taken from the neonates just after delivery for estimation of complete blood count (CBC), C reactive protein (CRP), nucleated RBCs, cord blood gases and Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Follow up BDNF level at 48 – 72 hrs postnatal for the patient group was done.
In the present study, neonates with perinatal hypoxia had significantly lower PH, PO2 & HCO3 and higher TLC, nucleated RBCs & BDNF level at delivery compared to control group.
