Abstract

According to WHO profile of TB country Egypt in 2004, the incidence of all cases per 100000 populations per year was 27, while the incidence of sputum positive cases per 100000 populations per year was 12 and the mortality was 3.2 (WHO, 2004b).
The lungs of diabetics with tuberculosis show defective defense mechanisms in the form of dystrophy of alveolar macrophages, type II alveolocytes and fibroblasts, generalized affection of pulmonary vessels, intensive fiber formation and disorganization of the pathological process (CID, 2007).
The aim of the present study is to assess the phagocytic activity of peripheral blood macrophages in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus compared to those with pulmonary tuberculosis without diabetes mellitus to normal healthy population .
Phagocytic index and Lytic index using opsonised suspension of Candida were used as reflection of phagocytic ability in this study.
The present study was conducted upon 60 subjects, 40 patients from inpatient of Omraneia Chest Hospital, and 20 healthy subjects.
