Abstract

At present, iontophoresis is used in the topical delivery of local anesthetics and anti-inflammatory agents. The treatment of hyperhidrosis and the diagnosis of CF are other clinical applications of iontophoresis. Also, a glucose-monitoring device has been developed utilizing the principle of reverse iontophoresis. US FDA approval has also been announced for a system that delivers fentanyl for iontophoretic analgesia. It is used nowadays in anesthesia of dermatology, urosurgery and ENT surgeries.
The often unavoidable skin sensitization/irritation and other adverse reactions have to be balanced against the therapeutic benefits of (bio)molecule administration.
Targeting of oligonucleotides/genes inside the nucleus of epidermal cells is the aim for therapeutic action in the future.
