Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both . There are two major types of diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus , caused by an absolute deficiency of insulin secretion due to an autoimmune destruction of the pancreas, while Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus results from the combination of insulin resistance and impaired β-cell function . This cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the prevalence of Type2 Diabetes Mellitus in the Diabetes Clinic – Ain Shams University Children’s Hospital and to show characteristics of Type 2 Diabetes in children and adolescents. The study was carried out in the period from September 2007 to February 2008 and included 501 patients of children and adolescents following up at the Pediatric Diabetes Clinic . All subjects were subjected to a complete history taking , complete physical examination and laboratory Investigations including assessment of fasting C-peptide And subjects were subdivided into 2 groups :group 1 included those with fasting C-peptide equals or less than 0.6 ng / ml and group 2 included those with fasting C-peptide more than 0.6 ng / ml. Assessment of lipid profile was done for patients of group 2 . The study revealed that group 2 cases , which are most probably Type 2 diabetes mellitus represents 11.8% . And in comparison with group 1 cases , which are most probably Type 1 diabetes mellitus , group 2 patients showed these characteristics : |
