Abstract

Left ventricular hypertrophy is the main cardiac consequence of
systemic hypertension. It’s early recognition is essential to reduce the risk
imposed on the patients as it is noted by itself to be an independent risk
of factor for sudden death, ventricular arrythmias, myocardial ischemia and
heart failure.
The present study included forty hypertensive patients twenty with left ventricular hypertrophy and twenty without left ventricular hypertrophy. The work aimed at studying the impact of left ventricular hypertrophy on exercise test parameters.
The two groups of patients were of similar age, sex, body weight and body mass index to exclude the influence of these factors on exercise test parameters.
During exercise, the haemodynamic changes of patients with left ventricular hypertrophy revealed significant increase in systolic blood pressure in comparison to those patients without LVH. (184.50±13.66 vs 159.75+8.19), significant increase in diastolic blood pressure (99.00+5.76 vs 94.75±4.99) and significant increase in peak rate pressure product (26.48±3.I8vs 23.42+1.36).
In addition the patients with left ventricular hypertrophy showed significant decrease in exercise capacity compared with those without left ventricular hypertrophy. There was significant decrease in METS achieved (7.02+2.44 vs 9.02±2.53) and exercise duration (4,17±2.29 vs 5.96±2.34).
