Abstract

Portal hypertension is a complex syndrome which is accompanied by various abnormal circulatory dynamics. It can result from a single or multiple causative factors. The most common cause for portal hypertension in Egypt is hepatic schistosomiasis. A frequent association between HCV infection and hepatic schistosomiasis in Egypt has been reported, causing a more severe form of liver disease than hepatic schistosomiasis alone.
The aim of this work is to compare the characteristics of portal hypertension in patients having schistosomal hepatic fibrosis with or without chronic hepatitis C.
This study was carried out on 35 male patient with portal hypertension, all were belonging to child A classification. Patients included in this study were divided into 3 groups: Group I: Included 15 patients with portal hypertension and pure
schistosomal hepatic fibrosis without chronic hepatitis (B and
C). Their mean age was 37.5±9.1 years.
Group II: included 10 patients with portal hypertension, schistosomal hepatic fibrosis and chronic hepatitis C without cirrhosis. Their mean age was 40.4±7.2 years.
