Abstract

The major function of growth hormone is the stimulation of growth. Its secretion by anterior pituitary gland is stimulated by growth hormone releasing-f actor (GRF), and inhibited by somatostatin.Physiological stimuli for QH release are associated with increased QH pulse amplitude rather than with increased pulse frequency;these include sleep, exercise and puberty.Hypoglycemia and ingestion of a high protein meal stimulate QH release, while FFA and glucose intake produce an acute suppression of QH secretion. It should be noted that circulating levels of QH decrease with age.About neurosecretory stimuli of QH secretion, we list a-adrenergic, dopamine, and acetyl choline agonists, and [3-adrenergic antagonists. On the other hand, B-adrenergic agonists, and a adrenergic, dopamine, and acetyl choline antagonists depress secretory impulses. In addition, opioids and galanin are neuropeptides which stimulate QH secretion .
