Abstract

A total of 70 adult penaeid shrimp are collected from Abu-Kir fishing ground to study the biological characters of Penaeid spp. used for spawning and producing larvae in Egypt. Beside following their spawning in (NIOF) shrimp hatchery to determine the reproductive parameters and problems facing each life stage of these species by recording the mortalities and clinical signs as well as trials of isolation and identification of the pathogenic agents from each stage. Twenty five water samples are collected from holding ponds of adult shrimp and larval tanks in shrimp hatchery for bacteriological and physicochemical examination to determine the environmental problems as another objective in this investigation.
The results of these studies were revealed that.
- The most important species of shrimp which are suitable for aquaculture in Egypt are Penaeus japonicus, Penaeus kerathurus and Penaeus semisulcatus.
- The life stages of these species include Naupliar stage which include five sub stages and Protozoal stage which include three substages and Mysis stage which include here substages then the mysis molt to post larval stage which similar to the adult shrimp.
- Survival rate of newly hatched shrimp larvae was ranged from 4.12 – 23.6% and there was a negative relationship between the accumulation of organic matter in spawning tanks and bacterial load in spawning water, and the survival rate of shrimp larvae.
