Abstract

Toxoplasma gondii, the protozoal coccidian parasite has been incriminated as one of the aetiologically significant agent in many obstetric disorders such as sporadic and habitual abortion, stillbirth and intrauterine fetal death. Cats are considered as the most important source of infection to the other species of mammals and birds as well as man.
The present work involved 100 cat faecal samples collected from different localities at Alexandria and El-Behera province as well as 200 blood samples from women with the history of
habitual abortion attending the antenatal clinic at Alexandria University Hospital and El-Behera Hospital in addition to 200 blood samples from 200 slaughtered cattle from different slaughterhouses in Alexandria and El-Behera provinces.
The parasitological examination of 100 samples collected
from different species of cats revealed that:
1. The prevalence of Toxoplasma oocysts was found to be 46%.
2. The most predominant species of higher prevalence detected was the domestic cat (56%) followed by Siamese cats (16%).
3. Stray cats showed higher Toxoplasma oocysts (60%) than indoor cats (34.3%) in Alexandria province. Also, in El-Behera
province, stray cats showed a higher Toxoplasma oocysts (64.7%) then indoor cats (42.4%).
