Abstract

The plantar fascia is a thickened, fibrous sheet of connective tissue acting as a mechanical truss and maintaining the integrity of the medial longitudinal arch. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammatory process affecting the plantar fascia and perifascial structures. Iontophoresis provides a mean of local, non-invasive, drug administration in treating plantar fasciitis when compared with the traditional administration of a drug by needle insertion. Dexamethasone is the most commonly used medication with iontophoresis to treat a variety of connective tissue disorders including plantar fasciitis.
The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of dexamethasone iontophoresis in treating plantar fasciitis, and to compare the effect of dexamethasone iontophoresis as a local, non-invasive drug delivery method to the effect of local dexamethasone injection in treatment of plantar fasciitis.
This study was performed on 21 patients with 26 feet examined complaining of plantar fasciits of at least 2 months duration. The patients were selected on the basis of their clinical presentation and confirmed by diagnostic ultrasonography.
