Abstract 1. (a) A literature survey on the evaluation of the standard electrode potential of the cell: Pt,H2/HCl(m),S(x),H20(100-x)/A£-:?l,Ag. is given. The relation of the standard free energy of transfer to the solvation of ions has been outlined. (b) The structure of water, alcohol, and water-alcohol mix-tmres are reviewed. (c) The aim »f the present study is to examine the thermody-namic properties of the reaction in the above cell.using lirater-methyl cellosolve mixtures. 2. (a) Experimental techniques, the purification of materials, the preparation of solutions are described. The proper¬ties of methyl cellosolve-water mixtures, namely, density, viscosity, dielectric constant, and vapor pressure- were ”determined over a wide range of solvent composition* (b) Potentiometric measurements in the range 25°-4-5°C at 5°C ^intervals are studied as a tool to study the ion-solvent interaction. 3« from density data, the contraction occurring in volume of methyl cellosolve-water mixture and in the partial molal volumes of the components was studied. This con-traction was explained on the basis of attraction between methyl cellosolve and water molecules through hydrogen bonding. |
