Abstract

This work aimed to evaluate a modem suture material
polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for oral cavity reconstruction 111
comparison to other suture materials as silk, catgut and vicryl.
A number of 60 dogs were used in this study, divided into 3
groups each of 20 dogs, each group divided into 4 subgroups (A, B, C
and control). All experimental dogs received 6 incised wounds in
buccal cavity (left and right side at gum, check and tongue). The
induced wounds of the left side was closed by PVDF, while the right
side was closed by silk, catgut and vicryl. The control subgroup was
kept without sutures.
The animals were examined clinically at 4th, th for first group, th
and 14th for second group and 7th, 14th and 21st days for third group
post-suturing. Specimens were taken for histopathological
examination from all animals after sacrificing at 7, 14 and 21 days
post operative.
After post operative 4th day there was no apparent difference
among suture materials used. Good healing status with little
inflammatory reaction were seen in PVDF suturing after 7 days, while
partial healing and marked inflammatory reaction in other suture
materials.
At 14 days PVDF showed complete healing, little inflammatory
