Abstract A new method of polymerization of β-Naphthol by using anhydrous aluminium chloride as primary catalyst and ferric chloride as secondary catalyst is introduced by El-GARF. This method is used in this study. The effect of different factors affecting the yield of polymerization reaction have been studied. It was found that the yield increases with increasing the polymerization time, polymerization temperature, and ?- naphthol: AlCl3:FeCl3 molar ratio. The optimum conditions were molar ratio 1:1:2 at temperature 1500C for four hours which give maximum yield which is 82.7%. IR spectra show that the structure of synthesised polymer was poly 2-hydroxy 1,4 naphthalene (PHN). DTA show that the polymer does not show any exothermic or endothermic peaks up to 9800C. the electrical properties was studied and it was found that (PHN) has semiconductor properties. |
