The human resources form the motive power of any nation development . So , countries all over the world direct their interests towards the fulfillment of the childhood needs as the first priority to assure the execution of their development plans . Therefore , fulfillment of the childhood needs is considered as a criteria and sign of the civilized nation. In this promising field , world governments are directed to promote the balanced physical , motor, sensory • social and intellectual child development through original and philosophical concepts that satisfy both present and future challenges.
‎Childhood is the most important stage in man’s life and is divided into inter - stages. This thesis is concerned with the late childhood or primary school stage ( 6 - 12 yrs. ) , which is the most important among the other childhood stages , through which I basis of the physical , sensory I social and intellectual child abilities are built.
‎The primary school is the first disciplinary educational establishment that receives the six years child . This school plays a vital role within the child’s life . According to the contemporary educational and pedagogical concepts I the primary school should be desigtied to perform as a beautiful , delightful and preferable child environment, within which, he enjoys a wide range of sensory interactions with its elements. Within the primary school or the external educational spaces , as an environmental context , pupil should be surrounded with different types of educational media that attract and encourage him to interact with . Therefore , the pupil scientific research and experimentation skills as well as his creative thinking abilities will be promoted.
‎Due to some factors such as bad design and planning in addition to the present educational system orientations, the Egyptian primary school in most of its cases is disabled to fulfill its functions . So , instead of achieving the pedagogical aims ,the primary school through the inefficient design of either its classrooms or the external educational spaces causes the child psychologically. physically and intellectually deterioration. As a result of these discouraging factors, the child then may be easily directed towards inadaptability and misbehavior in the society .
‎The Objectives:
‎Through the detailed design study on the classroom as an educational environment, the thesis aims to attain the promotion of both the academic and psychological performance of both the pupil and teacher.
‎On the other hand, through the detailed design study to the external educational spaces, the thesis aims to attain the ideal development of child exploratory , academic research and social skills as well as developing his aesthetic appreciation abilities to be directed to the surrounding natural environment. Through continuous interaction processes with the external educational spaces and their elements, these abilities will be gradually converted into growing behavioral orientations of respect and preservation towards the surrounding environment as its wide concept ..
‎To achieve these aims the thesis is divided into three volumes as follows:
Volume 1: Elementary Theoretical Studies on Children:
‎This Volume puts an emphasis on the main user of both classroom and external educational spaces , the child , through three main axis . The first is the psychological approach which studies the different properties and signs of the primary school stage ( 6 - 12 Yrs. ) child regarding: Physical, Motor, Sensory , Linguistic , Social and Intellectual development. The second axis is concerned with the impact of both physical and psycholbgical environment on developing either the child sensory perception or his creative thinking abilities .The third axis projects lights on the historical background of the Egyptian child education starting with Ancient Egypt and ending with a study on the educational policies applied recently in Egypt.
‎Volume 2: The Architectural Considerations for Educational Spaces:
‎This Volume is concerned with the architectural studies on the primary school classroom and the external educational spaces as an environmental context . The volume is divided into two parts :
‎Part 1 : Classroom Space:
‎This part commences with a study on the educational conununication process within the classroom space as an environmental context . This is followed by a study on different learning methods applied within the classroom environment to enrich the educational process. This introduction is followed by a detailed study on the architectural considerations and criteria ( design, furniture and storage elements, environmental, constructional and finishing materials) for the primary school classroom as well as its supporting service elements such as : corridors, toilets and stairs spaces .
‎Part 2 : The External Educational Spaces:
‎This part starts with an emphasis on expanding the learning range to The External Educational Spaces , which should functionally integrate with the classroom space . The design program of these spaces should be based on two main axis : the first is educational , through which the natural environmental elements within the school site should function as live learning media , while the second is concerned with the impact of these live learning media on the child sensory development . The architectural considerations and criteria for these spaces and their service elements cover the fields of : relation with the school site , planning, landscape, construction and finishing materials.
‎Volume 3: Field Study on the Primary School Classroom Within Alexandria Governorate:
‎This volume is concerned with a field study aiming, through both analytical and comparative studies, to evaluate the carrying out of the architectural considerations, and accordingly the functional performance, within samples of primary school classrooms representing the seven Alexandria Educational Zones ( Al-Montazah , East , Middle , West , El-Gomrok , El-Amreyah and Borg El-Arab ) .These studies lead to the conclusion and then the thesis at its end comes up with the suggested recommendations aiming to attain the ideal development to the Egyptian child through his educational environment.
