Abstract The study was carried out to investigate the influence of some treatments on the gossypol content of cottonseed oil and meal in an attempt to produce crude oil free from gossy-pol, of light colour, and to obtain meal of low content of free gossypol. Samples of fresh crude hydraulic-pressed cottonseed oil from the hydraulic-press mill, and of freshly ground cottonseed meats were obtained. I- The experiments carried out on crude oil comprised of oil treatment with borax. In the first treatment the oil was stored at 37°C for one month, after which it was treated with five borax concentrations namely, 0,47, 0.87, 1.27, 1.67, and 2.07%. The second treatment aimed to investigate the effect of treating the oil with the same borax concentrations, but before storage. It was found that storage of crude oil containing high gossy¬pol content resulted in oil of very dark colour which was very difficult to refine and bleach. Borax treat-ment before oil storage resulted in reduction of the total gossypol content of oil by 97-*99%, the oil was of light colour as it had a refined colour of 5«0-7.0 red units, and bleached colour of 3.7-4.5 red units. |
