Abstract

Railway transportation system deals with different traffic and train types. It spreads over a large network with complex and often obscure relationships. However, due to severe competition with other modes, the rail industry is eager to improve the operational efficiency; i.e. increase safety and decrease both travel time and train headways. To improve the operational efficiency, more than one solution is often possible. one of which is the introduction of automatic train control systems. Modifying the operating procedure and system characteristics produces many alternatives that need examinations to tlnd the best one in terms of effectiveness and cost. For this purpose, different techniques can be used; analytical methods, optimization algorithms, and simulation models. Railway simulation deals with replacing the actual railway line by a model which should be compatible and more convenient for study. Also, there is a need to have a model that can be easily modified and smoothly switched among different alternatives. This study illustrates a railway simulation technique (SIMU VII) that ensures computer-assists in both planning and operations control tasks; especially for long route sections, complex networks, and regional lines. The main objectives of the study are to examine the feasibility of the used railway simulation model to deal with automatic train control systems. as well as to test the effects of introducing these systems to improve the operation characteristics and the robustness and stability of timetables. First, different automatic control systems are presented, analyzed. and evaluated. Then, simulation for confirming the effect of introducing the automatic control systems is conducted by being applied to the Abou Kir regional rail line in Alexandria, as a case study.
