CVD is the leading cause of mortality in chronic renal failure patients even in the pediatric age group. The determinants of CVD in CRF population are multiple and include the traditional risk factors identified in the general population (e.g. hypertension and dyslipidemia) and additional risk factors specific to chronic renal failure (e.g. volume overload, anemia and chronic inflammation).
The aim of this study was to evaluate the adiponectin and lipid profile in pediatric patients with CRF and their possible relationships to renal replacement therapy and cardiovascular risk.
This case-control study was conducted on pediatric patients with CRF following up in the Pediatric Nephrology and Dialysis Unit, Children’s Hospital, Ain Shams University. Group I included 20 patients on regular hemodialysis. They were 14 males and 6 females. Their ages ranged from 7 years to 15 years. The duration of renal impairment ranged from 6 months up to 168 month. The duration of hemodialysis ranged from 6 months up to 72 months. Group II included 15 patients with CRF on conservative treatment. They were 10 males and 5 females. Their ages ranged from 5 years to 16 years. The duration of renal impairment ranged from 6 months up to 192 months. A control group of 20 apparently healthy children was included in the study. They were 9 males and 11 females. Their ages ranged from 5 years to 16 years.
