Abstract
The present investigation was carried out to throw the light on the
important enteric parasites that infect zoo animals in Alexandria zoo
park. Therefore the study classified into 3 stages, the first of them, to
survey the enteric parasites and its infection percentage among 82
captive wild animals of Alexandria zoological garden during one year.
The second to control these parasites by using some commercial
and the third to evaluate the efficacy of some of these
commercial drugs by counting of egg per gram of feaces. The study was
conducted in Alexandria zoo- Egypt from September 1991 till August
1992 including 5 Egyptian deers, 3 Areal deers, 18 Barbary sheep, 3
Chempanzees , 2 Patas monkeys,7 white fronted capuchin monkeys, 18
Hamadryas Baboons monkeys, 4 zebra, 5 ponies, 10 lions, 5 Tigers,
and 2 black Leopard, Faecal analysis of wild ruminants revealed that the enteric parasites infected Arui sheep were Fasciola, Trichostrongylus spp. and Eimeria spp. in percentage of 17.13, 10.3, and 8.68% respectively, and in Egyptian deer the percentage of infection was 4.17% for Fasciola spp.
2.5% for Trichosterongylus spp. and 17.1 % for Trichuris spp. while in the
Areal deer were 13.9, 5.56 and 13.89% for Fasciola, Trichostrongylus,
Trichuris spp. respectively. Dealing with the enteric parasites infected
primates were; pin worm and Ascaris spp. as well as with protozoa
(Entamoeba histo/ytica) at infection rate 66.04%. The annual infection
rate of helminthes and protozoa was 53.06% and 12.990/0 respectively.
The annual percentage of Ascaris eggs output via faeces of
Chimpanzee, Patas monkeys and Baboons monkey were 8.33,
