Abstract The present energy requirement of the world can be met if the annual incidence cf solar energy upcn the surface of the earth is collected using solar collectors operating at a low radiation conversion efficiency of 10 %• The ability to synthesize chemicals from abundent, renewable resources could have a significant importance on the energy consumption in the entire world. The utilization of solar energy in the photo-oxidation of furfuryl alcohol to 5-hydroxy-2(5H)- furanone was investigated using aluminium 4_ phthalocyanine tetra sulfonate (AlPcT S ) as a sensitizer. This study incorporated the investigation of three main points; a) The effect of various light sources on the sensitizer in water and different media, b) The effect of oxygen and reactant on AlPc IS ~, C) The photo-oxidation process itself in view of the suggested mechanism concerning the formation of the main product. Electronic spectrophotometric studies showed that, upon irradiation with white light, a decrease in the uv-vis. intensity of the absorption 4_ bands of AlPcT 5 has taken place following a first order reaction kinetics. This indicated that this sensitizer undergoes electronic transitions and is converted to highly energetic species capable of participating in the photochemical process. Such absorption decay is a function of the type of radiation as well as the media. |
