Abstract Hypertension in pregnancy is defined as blood pressure levels greater than 140/90 mm Hg at least 4 hours apart or a diastolic blood pressure level more than 110 mmHg at any time during pregnancy up to 6 weeks postpartum. (1) According to population-based data, hypertension (dBP of 90 mmHg or higher) complicates 7-9% of pregnancies.(2,3).Approximately 1% of pregnancies are complicated by pre-existing hypertension and 5-6% by gestational hypertension without proteinuria, of which 50% presents prior to term.(4) . Pre-existing hypertension is that which presents either before pregnancy or before 20 weeks’ gestation and may be secondary to diabetes, renal disease or other maternal disease, whereas non-proteinuric gestational hypertension is hypertension that presents at 20 or more weeks’ gestation in the absence of proteinuria .(1) |
