Abstract The present work was carried out in order to select certain bacterial isolates with high activity to degrade petroleum crude oil and to induce mutations for the enhancement of crude oil biodegradation. Thus, a comprehensive review of literature was prepared that covers most of the previously published results in this area. In the preliminary experiments, the ability of 14 different bacterial isolates which were isolated from Mediterranean sea water and Egyptian soil to utilize crude oil and its fractions were conducted. The crude oil proved to be more assimilable by bacterial isolates P. aeruginosa (PUS) and P. fluorescens (PU2) than the other isolates, as shown by their rapid growth on the crude oil containing medium. The biomass yield, and the pH changes during growth, indicated that they were able to utilize the crude oil in Mediterranean sea water supplemented with phosphorus and nitrogen sources. P. aeruginosa was killed completely by 10% (v/v) crude oil, P. fluorescens was able to survive and utilize the petroleum crude oil, as shown by emulsification of the crude oil. |
