Abstract

This study was made to demonstrate how pesticides affect the environment especially the biological systems. ATPase system was chosen for its vital importance in the cell metabolism.
The effects of oligomycin and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD) on ATPase activity of castor bean mitochondria were initially tested. Oligomycin and DCCD have very similar functional effects. ATPase activity was inhibited at very low titre of either compound. The results suggested that the inhibition was sufficient to specifically inhibit the mitochondrial ATPase and not react with other proteins in the mitochondria.
Quercetin was also tested against castor bean mitochondrial ATPase activity. At concentration of 40 yM, 55% stimulation of ATPase activity occurred. However, at 200 juM, quercetin caused a drastic inhibition reaching 72%.
The effect of the synthetic detergents, used often as wetting agents with pesticides, namely triton X114, tween 80, aminoxid Ws3S and sodium cholate, were tested on ATPase activity of castor bean mitochondria at concentration ranging from 1x10-”*% to 2x10-*-%. At all concentrations used, triton X114 and sodium cholate did not affect ATPase activity while sensitivity to oligomycin
